The Device Project- Final Evaluation

This project was very fun and very challenging. I absolutely love working in Fusion 360, I understood the software quickly and I honestly just flew through the work of the first two weeks after that. I had been wanting to learn how to use Fusion for a few months leading up to now, which is why I think I took to it so easily.

I was very happy when I found out who was in my group, I get on well with everyone. We did however have quite a few issues within the project early on. Through no fault of their own, one of our members was unable to contribute until about halfway through the project, so we were a member short for many big decisions. For the members that were able to be there, we agreed on things quickly, but had some communication issues resulting in some design work being the opposite of what was agreed. I am very pleased to say that we managed to get a system going after only a couple of disagreements, so these issues were few and far between from then on.

For the most part, I was on modelling duty. One of my group members also did a lot of modelling work- we worked incredibly well as a pair, so I had nothing to complain about. Looking back on how well we communicated and worked together, I cannot help but be proud of us.

The others mainly worked on advertisement- posters and such. I was not very involved in creating the logo, the website or the posters for our company, but I did not mind all that much. I love design and illustration work, don’t get me wrong, but knowing that I could focus on my tasks and leave it to them was a relief, since we had such a short amount of time to get everything done in.

As well as the modelling work I did, I also produced a physical prototype of our product. I have many skills, materials and equipment from my doll customising hobby, so I was the best suited to making it. I printed and painted all of the modelled parts, making sure to follow the colour scheme we decided on in the renders we did. I used UV Resin to attach a thin elasticated thread to the orb and rings, as well as tiny snap closures from my doll clothes to the bottom of the orb, inside the socket and underneath the base of the socket. I used some salvaged fabric that I already owned to sew together the glove itself and sewed snap closures to it, allowing for the socket base to easily clip onto it. This also made it removable which we didn’t necessarily need, but was nifty nonetheless. I used my Cricut Joy cutting machine to produce a vinyl sticker of our logo to put on the glove as a finishing touch.

I gave this prototype to one of my group members, who modelled it for photos and videos. Using these, I was able to edit a 35-second-long advert for our product using my skills in Premiere Pro, After Effects and Photoshop. It is the thing I am most proud of that I have made for UCA work to date.

In conclusion, I enjoyed this project immensely and loved working with my group. I was very nervous about the presentation due to my fear of public speaking, but we managed to make it work- very well in my opinion if the audience reaction is anything to go by. I will miss working so closely with my group since I cannot see them in person due to lockdown, but I am sure we will all keep in touch more than we would have without doing this project. I am looking forward to the next one.

Really pleased you enjoyed this project and the opportunity to showcase so many different skills. I am sure you will put these skills to further use in future projects. Congratulations to you and the rest of your team for putting together such a great project.
